The Harrogate Advertiser
Harrogate Dramatic Society members can chalk up yet another triumph
- playing to packed houses with their latest production, The Dresser
by Ronald Harwood.
Set in and around the dressing room of a provincial theatre in wartine
during a performance of King Lear, the audience is exposed to the
endangered species of the actor-laddie.
Sir, played superbly by Peter Wilson ranged from piteous self-doubt
to self assurance in his precarious profession and held the audience
from start to finish.
The essential support part, played by Chris Cowling as Norman, Sir's
dresser, was carried with great consistency and detail.
The two characters played off each other so well though laughter,
sadness but always with a sense of the theatrical.
A polished performance by Judith Simpson as Her Ladyship, wife and
lead-actress to Sir, gave further weight.
The scene behind the set where Sir missed his cue was hilarious,
leaving the stranded actors on stage to ad lib in Shakespearian.
With a suitably seedy changing room set and clever direction from
Joan Mallett, this was definately yet another success.
And all that theatrical temprament finally gives way to a rather
unexpected ending
Jonathan Bennett.
