The Harrogate Advertiser
Yet another success has been notched up by Harrogate Dramatic Society
as the new season opened with "The Holly And The Ivy"
Keeping up the fine reputation, the eight-strong cast presented Wynyard
Browne's entertaining family drama with great charm.
And full marks to Lewis Simm for some splendid direction. He might not
have been in the hot seat for quite a number of years, but certainly has
not lost the touch.
Neither has Peter Wilson, one of the society's longest serving members
who tool the lead role as the Rev. Martin Gregory.
I thought he portrayed the ageing clergyman exactly right and won everyone's
sympathy as his children confronted him with their secrets and unhappiness.
In fact, there was excellent casting throughout. Making her debut, Melanie
Lloyd played the elder daughter, Jenny with the purity and caring nature
Wynyard intended while Sue Stott provided the contrast as Jenny's younger
sister Margaret.
She managed to convey bitterness and hurt as well as tackling the most
difficult of tasks, the stage faint!
The two aunts, played by Shirley Grimshaw and Iris Mitchell were also
super and injected plenty of humour with their unintentional comments
and behaviour.
