Withering satire of faith, law and order, and the rituals of bereavement meet breakneck farce in Joe Orton’s darkly funny ‘Loot’. As provocative today as it was in the 1960s, the play sees best friends and partners in crime Hal and Dennis dealing with the aftermath of robbing the bank next door to the funeral home where Dennis works. The pair attempt to hide their ill-gotten gains in Hal’s family home, a home in mourning for his recently deceased mother. The fiasco builds with a coffin filled with bank notes, a corpse that keeps appearing around the house, and Hal’s bereaved father romantically pursued by a nurse with murderous intent. That’s all before the arrival of an infamous detective disguised as an official from the water board.
