The first of these productions was \u201cThe Barretts Of Wimpole Street\u201d by Rudolph Besier which was a great success:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;By skilful casting, adroit production and careful rehearsal, the Harrogate Dramatic Society has reached a new standard of achievement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite>Lal Walker, The Harrogate Advertiser<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>October 1947<\/strong>&nbsp;The society presented \u201cAutumn\u201d by Gregory Ratoff and Margaret Kennedy at St Mark\u2019s Church Hall and then entered the play for the first post-war Harrogate Drama Festival. The production was Joint Winner and was also entered for the Skipton Festival, where it was awarded The Irving Trophy (Festival Winner).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By this time the Society had raised nearly \u00a3700 towards its goal of a Little Theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hds-online.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/alice48a.jpg?w=500\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-368 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>In <strong>1948<\/strong>&nbsp;the first Christmas production at The Royal Hall was \u201cAlice In Wonderland\u201d by Lewis Carroll opening on Boxing Day&nbsp;and playing for a week. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The financial success of the Royal Hall productions in 1947 and 1948 (as well as \u201cRomance\u201d by Edward Sheldon in 1949) enabled The Society to face its future with confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Old Swan Hotel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hds-online.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/amanabouthehouse1966d.jpg?w=500\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-398 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>After successful negotiations with The Harrogate Hydro (now The Old Swan Hotel) the Society moved into its first real \u201chome\u201d. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The ballroom and winter garden were transformed four times a year into a palatial Little Theatre and rehearsal premises (in the old Turkish Baths) were made available. Later a rehearsal room and a committee room were made over, solely for the Society\u2019s use, in the maids\u2019 wing upstairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1956<\/strong>, the&nbsp;<strong>tenth anniversary<\/strong>&nbsp;of the Society was celebrated by a dinner dance at The Old Swan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Society was established and successful with over a hundred members and over 600 Patrons<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1967<\/strong>&nbsp;Directors of the Old Swan informed us reluctantly that they could no longer offer us the Little Theatre or the maids\u2019 quarters on any regular basis therefore the society had to find a new \u2018home\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1985<\/strong>&nbsp;Returning to The Old Swan Hotel for the 40th season, the society performed \u201cMove Over Mrs. Markham\u201d by Ray Cooney.
