Sheila is a strong willed but sympathetic girl engaged to Gerald, the wealthy son of a local peer. Also present at the celebration is the Burling’s son Eric, a weak young man who drinks too much.

The engagement party is interrupted by the arrival of the enigmatic Inspector Goole, to announce that a young woman has just died in great agony at the local hospital. Did one of the other characters cause the tragedy?

As the play unfolds each character’s secrets and skeletons provide dramatic and emotional scenes and of course, Priestley’s surprise ending…
